St John's school; working toward the International School Award

To develop our students’ understanding of the world around them, St John’s school is working toward achieving the International School Award.

The International Schools Award is an accreditation scheme for curriculum based international work in schools. It provides recognition for schools which are working to instil a global dimension into the learning experience of its students.

St Johns aims to develop the following:

  •    Year round international activity
  •    Collaborative curriculum work with partner schools
  •    Students being involved in international work
  •    Embedding an international ethos throughout the school

St John’s School was awarded the Foundation Level International Schools Award: Introducing Internationalism in July 2009. To gain this award the school has, ‘demonstrated an excellent start in promoting the international dimension across the school & in highlighting the benefits of learning in a global context.’

This academic year St Johns has made a commitment to supporting Dabaso School in Kenya through various fund raising activities. Students will be involved in organising & participating in these charity events. Student awareness of cultural & social issues will be enhanced in curriculum areas such as English, Geography PSHE & Music. We hope to gradually develop communication links with the school.

Mrs Diane Lamont & Mrs Anne Lawrence gave a presentation to the students to provide an insight into life at Dabaso school & the hardships they endure on a daily basis. Mrs Lamont was presented with a cheque for €1400. This amount was raised by students participating in the Richard Fisher Swim at the end of the summer term.

Students are now collecting tooth brushes, which are given by teachers at Dabaso as rewards plus balloons & milk bottle tops, which can be used in maths lessons for counting.

St Johns is also working toward forging a partnership link with a school in Japan.
